Not intentially warped...more like encouraged to be that way. Hogwarts has always been aware the Slytherin produces all the "darker" wizards, yet it allows the house to continue as is. Obviously, there is a need for that kind of wizard, as dangerous as it can be. And there is a dark side and a light side to everyone. Remember, Harry was almost placed in Slytherin to begin with...
