So Season 5 of Mad Men is over which means I have a little bit of my life back where I'm not constantly obsessing, but there's still a lot to chew over. Especially with my boy, Campbell. Because I've read so many reviews that either ignored his story as concluded in the finale or dismissed it as confusing and meaningless. Which I do not get. Maybe the story could have been done better, given that any story with this character has to break through a wall of resistance with viewers. Far from breaking through that wall with those viewers, this story just made it thicker because unhappy!Pete is unlikeable Pete. This year Pete lost a lot of people who'd grown to tolerate him because he'd been faithful to his wife. But I think Pete's story would actually have been considered a lot more interesting if given to another character. But too bad, it was Pete! )

Mad Men this week saw the return of my favorite recurrent symbol: The hobo! Guest character Beth (aka Rory Gilmore) told Pete she didn't like NYC because of "all the hobos." She always made the mistake of making eye contact and giving them money, then they wouldn't leave her alone and she couldn't stop thinking about them. Her dad counseled her to ignore them since you can't help everyone.

I was kind of blown away by Mad Men last night. It was a night of Pete Campbell at his worst, and yet it made me realize that he's probably my favorite character. I've always perked up whenever he was in a scene and last night he just made my heart hurt. Going to bed I was like...how can you be so taken with such a nasty, sad little character nobody likes for good reason? Because he's so damn unhappy and inadequate and is cursed to try too hard and get exactly the opposite results because he just can't relax or be himself if he even knows who that self is and he's...

OMG, he's Draco Malfoy.

Oh no. I've found another one. )

I can't believe Mad Men is back this weekend. I was not happy at the end of last season, though I loved the season itself. Waiting for the premiere, I found myself thinking about a discussion I seemed to have constantly on message boards about that show during Season 4 that made me really sad, but people felt very strongly about it.

Basically, it dealt, for me, with how you deal with multi-generational characters in fiction, especially in a historical show. No spoilers, I don't think. There is no right age to act. )

I was reading a post that referenced a recent article about "show stopper" characters (characters the author felt killed the show dead when they were onscreen for various reasons) and in the course of the discussion somebody made the mistake of asking me what I think about Betty Draper on Mad Men post-divorce. I immediately realized I had way to much that I thought to burden somebody else's entry with! So within, here are my very much tl;dr thoughts on Betty Draper and other things related in my head... )

The lesson here is: never ask me what I think about something on Mad Men!

I did not sleep at all last night and I'm embarrassed to admit it was actually because I was apparently annoyed by watching this show before bed. When I did fall asleep I kept waking up to bad dreams about the show! Not literally about the show, like starring Don Draper, but dreams that made me feel the same way. I don't even really know how I feel about it, so this might be incoherent as I try to sort through it.

spoilers, obviously )

I've been having these vague thoughts lately on "realistic" drama, and how it is or isn't realistic, or how real life does or doesn't get considered realistic. And seeing a couple of comments on the last couple of episodes of Mad Men spurred me to actually write some of them down.

Basically, it just occured to me how when you think about great dialogue, it's usually dialogue that is either witty and subtle or incisive and sharp. Dialogue or drama that's sentimental, clunky, or too on the nose is fake or inept. Yet so often in real life people are all those things. More stuff in here--but no real spoilers. )

I've never talked about Mad Men here but I've been getting into this big discussion about this week's ep and just how much of a jerk Don was with Peggy (answer: a big one!). I wrote this response about the contrasting scenes between Don/Peggy and Duck/Peggy, and figured I'd put it up here if anyone who watches the show is interested.
