I have read stuff since DH about how people liked the Malfoys in it because they were on their own side and not either side. It made me think about why I found this story ( disappointing. )

I was having a conversation today that touched on Lucius Malfoy...I've never talked much about Lucius, but after HBP especially I'm very fond of the character. One of the problems with him is that I think, like Draco, there's always been such a question mark as to what kind of character he really is. People have always just filled him in as they needed to for their fic--which is of course fine. Draco was basically the same way, treading water for 5 books (is he Mabel or Flashman? Does he have any point at all?) and then revealing a lot more of what the character may have been about only in HBP. So I was thinking about Lucius and I realized that in trying to understand him these days it comes down to which characters with whom to group him. ( And I group him with the Marauders. )
