Some Sicilians are pretty dark. Really...northern Italy is basically in the Swiss Alps...and southern Italy and Sicily are basically in northern Africa.

Plus...Sicily saw all kinds of everybody. Carthaginians, Greeks, Arabs, Spaniards...it's quite possible for him to be incredibly dark skinned as an Italian...and the distinction may well be lost on others.
