I really like this. You've said a lot of things I've been thinking about lately and put it all into much more coherent words that I would have. :) I've never liked discussions about top vs. bottom in the ship, and I've also never really liked stories that cast them as polar opposites. The truth is that they're both complex characters with a lot of grey area and that's the part that excites me. What you said about Draco acting as a protagonist in his own story also hit the nail on the head, IMO. One of the dynamics I like best of the relationship is that each character stands apart from his peers because of the specific roles each plays with respect to the war - situations that, by their very nature, set them apart from the other students surrounding them. I loved HBP for the way it developed both Harry and Draco and I love what you've said here.
