The thing that annoys me most about the contrived "wand ownership changing hands without the actual wand being present" thing is that surely over the course of centuries, somebody who "owned" the Elder Wand must have been disarmed or "defeated" or whatever without the person who disarmed them actually winding up with the actual physical Elder Wand. So the True Owner of the Elder Wand should really be the guy who disarmed the guy who disarmed the guy who disarmed the guy who disarmed the guy who disarmed Grindelwald 87 years previously.
