OH, I actually agree with everything you're saying here in both comments. I didn't mean to make it seem I thought everybody had just jumped on H/S because it was new--I know there are plenty of people who have always shipped it and I can really see why! I think it's always been one of the most important relationships in canon, certainly one if not the most interesting and complex and dark--and those aspects of it get more interesting as Harry gets older and can deal with Snape more on the same level. If I were to pick the most important relationship in Harry's life at the moment I think I'd say his relationship with Snape. In fact, I might have always said that from book 1, I think, because Snape is a far more intriguing adult character, imo, than any of the others as far as Harry's concerned. Snape always wants to tell Harry the truth, even if its his version of the truth...and that's thrilling.
So I don't think there's anything odd about shipping H/S--especially not due to Snape not being conventionally attractive because it's true--why should that matter in a fic? Or in life a lot of the time? Snape's an attractive character because of his character, not his looks.
I just meant that for me, if somebody says there's canon evidence for a ship it means this relationship really is about a romance or sexual attractive consciously in the minds of the participants. And while I find H/S to have tons of layers and room for all sorts of things, and disturbing and intimate for lots of reasons (especially with Occulamency because it is such a violation for both of them that definitely calls to mind some of those "forced sexual relations fics!) I just didn't think that OotP changed their relationship in a way that it was suddenly about different issues than it had been before. For me, canon ship doesn't necessarily have to do with characters being attractive (Cho and Fleur are both attractive and Harry doesn't like either of them) but just the idea that Harry wants to go out with them. It's pretty lame, really, in comparison to the more interesting stuff going on between Harry and Snape!
