Yeah, pretty much my opinion. As a side-issue, I always find it interesting that a lot of people seem to remember the movie version of that particular event rather than the book, and indeed, why the film-makers chose to change the scenes they did. In that case, I would guess, because an audience is supposed to immediately warm to Hagrid, and seeing him curse a child off the bat could make that difficult...
