Heh--I didn't think there was any big conspiracy. I wasn't really surprised either--it seems like Crash had become the favorite in the last few weeks. It's very LA with a lot of people involved with it, so yeah, I don't think it was a big political statement. I suspect people voted *for* Crash rather than *against* anything else.
I have read some people say that it was surely because the voters were too terrified to let such a "controversial" choice win the Best Picture award, and so they apparently all got together and decided that the more mainstream Crash would be the safer bet. Call me hopelessly naive, but I can't really imagine that all the voters had the exact same opinions there. Maybe some of them...just liked Crash the best. Who can say?
