I've never been a fan of Clooney but he absolutely deserved these nominations and should have won the screenplay award for GNGL. I don't know how his speech would play or read out of context, but it was a direct follow-up to Jon Stewart's opeing monologue and played off it very well.
Ah, see I've just read it online, without watching the ceremony (which hasn't played it yet) so I guess it comes off as worse than if I was watching and hearing the other speeches and his tone of voice...
