Lost

You know, there's really no reason to do more Kate episodes because they all come down to the same thing: Kate manipulates a man and gets her to do stuff for her, in the course of which he will be injured or killed, and then Kate cries and feels bad. The Kids in the Hall used to do a skit about Skura: The Gentle Shark, who maimed and killed people but felt really bad about it. She is Kate: The Sentimental Shark.

In the last minute she'll always do some stunt to prove that she's not a killer and she has a Heart or something (often resulting in Even More Death for Somebody Not Kate!), but Sawyer is still clearly right that basically she cares about herself and anybody stupid enough to think otherwise is going to probably wind up dead. I'd have more respect for her if she just killed people, but this whole, "Wah! Feel sorry for me for putting someone in danger and they died!" is getting a little crazy.

And apparently she's being doing it since before she hit puberty because that pre-teen romance thing was just sad--yeah, Kate was totally in love with little Time Capsule Boy. Uh-huh. Sure. And they were planning their wedding when they were 10--who are these people? This episode did, at least, give us the wonderful information that that toy plane Kate manipulated the men on the island for before belongs to another woman's husband, whom Kate got killed. So when "Rachel" (I think that was what he said his wife's name was) comes home with her 22 month old son for her parents house, she will not only be a widow, but know that her husband spent his last night alive with his twoo wuv since childhood, so she can now question whether her husband wanted to be with her. Excellent! Like Kate said, if she wants your spot, she gets your spot!

There's a cliche where guys always say that girls always go for jerks and don't like nice guys. I think Kate gives me just the barest idea of what they feel like, because Kate's power amazes me. And now she's giving Sun advice?! (I thought Sun poisoning the water was a bit OOC, btw. I know she did it, but it didn't seem like something she would do.) Kate's mother had the right idea--as soon as Kate shows up at your door, call for help. Better yet, change your name so she can't show up for old times' sake and put you in the line of fire because she's decided she can't live without her old Girl Scout badges of great sentimental value.

What I want to know is why Walt told his dad he burned down the first raft. And what Walk saw when Locke grabbed his arm... it seemed very Dead Zone-esque, only backwards...

Walt and Locke have something going on, and I want to know what it is. Can they both see the true nature of the island? Are they both connected, to each other, on some other level? Both? Any speculation?

I've always trusted Locke... I think he knows what's best for the island members (not to mention the obvious link between his mindset and the -real- John Locke from history), and he wants to get into that hatch...

Anyway... on the coming attractions for next week: do you think everybody gets on the boat and leaves, somehow? Is that even possible? Should they trust the French lady?

I didn't have the strength to be irritated. I simply started reading other stuff. Kate needs to die, but they won't kill her, so I'll pretend that she doesn't exist.

Perfectly, perfectly stated.

I didn't quite follow what was going on with the mom though. Was the guard in the hall looking for Kate? In case she came to see her mom? Post bank-robbery?

And more importantly, are those Kate's (ie the actress's) real lips?

Hee, you do have Kate's number. And yes, TMI. Let's move on.

Up till now I've been pretty neutral about Kate. She came off as a woman just cursed with this HORRIBLE judgment, which I thought was cause she'd been damaged and couldn't see things clearly till it was too late.

Still think that, except that now I've come to dislike her intensely for it. Its true... knowing more about her past didn't help, cause Kate is basically Jinx Girl who will suck you into a cloud of misfortune that dogs her steps and somehow spares her, but fries everyone else she gets to know pretty much on contact.

Yeah - I think she needs to go. What 's left to discover about her? We know now why that little plane meant so much to her and she's confessed about the marshal. What remains except to find even more innovative ways for her to get people around her killed?

Interestingly enough, my daughter hated her on sight from the first show on. Whenever Kate was featured in a scene daughter could be heard muttering "hooker..." A tad shocking for mom to hear... but now I find I'm finally empathizing with that sentiment.

God. Kate is the most totally loathesome Mary Sue ever.

You realize that now whenever I see Kate I'll be hearing that KITH song in my head?

(Skura... Skura... Skura the gentle shaaaaaark...)

I never had a problem with Kate but now I hate her. Not only was she stupid and selfish in this episode she used up an episode of flashbacks with uselessness!

I gotta say I'm not sure who I'm more scared of Walt of Locke. Locke is not gonna let a pesky thing like common sense stop him from getting inside the hatch. Where did that light come from? And did anyone else notice Shannon looking all scrubby and like she has actaully been stranded on an island for weeks and weeks?

OK, I'm going to answer this before reading the other responses, so bare with me, if I repeat anything anyone has said.

But first off, as season finale, wasn't this episode VERY anti-climactic? I would have expected it to at least end with some huge cliff-hanger, like they finally get to open the hatch, or some clue about the other people on the island, or something. Instead it's just boring Kate-episode. Most of the other characters manage to make me feel something for them when they have their episodes, but Kate, it doesn't matter how much she cries, she just leaves me cold.

I prayed that this wouldn't be another Jack-episode, and as it started with shots of different women I was like "phew, it's probably not", then it seemed to focus on a girl with blond, curly hair, so I figured it might be Claire, which I thought could be in place, since she's only had one ep. I was so disappointed. Kate has turned into my second least favourite character of the show, and this is her third ep, while others had had just one. *headdesk*

As for Sun poisoning the water, I'm not sure I thought it OOC (especially not when it turned out Kate had talked her into it), but I thought Jack's sense of morality was sort of... weird. "I don't see why anyone else would need to know." Uh-hu? Except that now everybody suspects two other persons, who might risk not getting a spot on that raft? The twist that Kate had talked Sun into it was the only thing interesting about the episode, since it means she sort of did do it after all. And I won't buy that she didn't have that ulterior agenda for a second.

When Kate said that she knew how to sail, the first person I thought of was you. The ultimate Mary-Sue. She even sails. What DOESN'T she know how to do?

I hate Kate. I'm glad her name's Kate, so I can rhyme my hate.

Heya. After having watched Lost on DVDs I went and searched for people's posts on it from last season. This is the first one I found.

I actually didn't have that exact opinion of Kate. I mean, I do, in a way, except that as a character she fascinates me instead of annoys me. I didn't consider what's-his-face's death to be the same as her treatment of other people. She seemed to really feel guitly about that, to really have loved him, and she considered herself to have killed him even though I didn't think it was exactly her fault. Her treatment of others, though, seems to be exactly the way US Marshall guy said. She's cold.

Though I hadn't really noticed the show doing a constant "wah feel sorry for me for putting someone in danger". I thought this was the only example of it. And while I didn't really feel sorry for her, I did think this was genuine heartbreak for her. Whereas I don't think she cared much about anyone else she's left behind. (I do think she's genuinely attached to Jack, but she doesn't entirely want to be.)

Um anyways I'm just randomly speculating. I haven't seen any 2nd season. Apparantly next week you find out what she did. (tell me nothing!) :) But I found that I liked Kate. She's not a good person. But I liked her.
