You know, there's really no reason to do more Kate episodes because they all come down to the same thing: Kate manipulates a man and gets her to do stuff for her, in the course of which he will be injured or killed, and then Kate cries and feels bad. The Kids in the Hall used to do a skit about Skura: The Gentle Shark, who maimed and killed people but felt really bad about it. She is Kate: The Sentimental Shark.
In the last minute she'll always do some stunt to prove that she's not a killer and she has a Heart or something (often resulting in Even More Death for Somebody Not Kate!), but Sawyer is still clearly right that basically she cares about herself and anybody stupid enough to think otherwise is going to probably wind up dead. I'd have more respect for her if she just killed people, but this whole, "Wah! Feel sorry for me for putting someone in danger and they died!" is getting a little crazy.
And apparently she's being doing it since before she hit puberty because that pre-teen romance thing was just sad--yeah, Kate was totally in love with little Time Capsule Boy. Uh-huh. Sure. And they were planning their wedding when they were 10--who are these people? This episode did, at least, give us the wonderful information that that toy plane Kate manipulated the men on the island for before belongs to another woman's husband, whom Kate got killed. So when "Rachel" (I think that was what he said his wife's name was) comes home with her 22 month old son for her parents house, she will not only be a widow, but know that her husband spent his last night alive with his twoo wuv since childhood, so she can now question whether her husband wanted to be with her. Excellent! Like Kate said, if she wants your spot, she gets your spot!
There's a cliche where guys always say that girls always go for jerks and don't like nice guys. I think Kate gives me just the barest idea of what they feel like, because Kate's power amazes me. And now she's giving Sun advice?! (I thought Sun poisoning the water was a bit OOC, btw. I know she did it, but it didn't seem like something she would do.) Kate's mother had the right idea--as soon as Kate shows up at your door, call for help. Better yet, change your name so she can't show up for old times' sake and put you in the line of fire because she's decided she can't live without her old Girl Scout badges of great sentimental value.

I actually didn't have that exact opinion of Kate. I mean, I do, in a way, except that as a character she fascinates me instead of annoys me. I didn't consider what's-his-face's death to be the same as her treatment of other people. She seemed to really feel guitly about that, to really have loved him, and she considered herself to have killed him even though I didn't think it was exactly her fault. Her treatment of others, though, seems to be exactly the way US Marshall guy said. She's cold.
Though I hadn't really noticed the show doing a constant "wah feel sorry for me for putting someone in danger". I thought this was the only example of it. And while I didn't really feel sorry for her, I did think this was genuine heartbreak for her. Whereas I don't think she cared much about anyone else she's left behind. (I do think she's genuinely attached to Jack, but she doesn't entirely want to be.)
Um anyways I'm just randomly speculating. I haven't seen any 2nd season. Apparantly next week you find out what she did. (tell me nothing!) :) But I found that I liked Kate. She's not a good person. But I liked her.

See, the characters you hate are good for something: they are damn impolite to the other assholes. That's one thing I valued Sawyer for, even when I hated every second he was on screen: he was going to tell the main characters exactly what they didn't want to hear about themselves.
