I well remember the complete stunned amazement on the part of journalists when a man who'd lost his son in the IRA bombing of Warrington town centre said he forgave them and called on everyone to pray for the perpetrators. He pointed out (rightly, I thought) that to do ought else would give the perpetrators power over him which they did not deserve, but you could see the idea didn't compute in the minds of some of the commentators.
