This is true--though sometimes in HP I feel like I can both argue that somebody is doing the right thing by their own pov--or actually, I think a better description would be that the character is doing the only logical thing they can do given who they are under those circumstances. And my frustration doesn't come from their being considered the bad guy (because often, objectively speaking, I would agree they are) but that they're sort of set up in a no-win situation without that being acknowledged, if that makes sense. Dumbledore famously says it's our choices that show who we are, but that usually seems to be understood ina really simplistic way (iow: if you choose to do something nasty you are a nasty person). There's rarely any real study into why a person does something and how they might be able to make better choices, nor how circumstances can play a huge part in what a person appears to be.
