His interaction with Draco prior to HBP was as close to friendly as we've seen him, but distant, and there's an obviously large gap between them in HBP, so it doesn't seem to me that they're very close.
Really? I thought their relationships seemed stronger than ever in HBP.
Not that this means they aren't formal. See, I don't think that whatever we're talking about is close in terms of them being very intimate in an affectionate way, the way we usually think of as a surrogate family member. That's partially why I started out thinking if characters like Rico in 6FU (though he isn't a good analogy either), because the thing with them is that they *aren't* family. That's more what defines them. So in HBP it seems like Snape is a surrogate family member simply because the Blacks are so dependent on him--Narcissa goes to him for help, Bellatrix is afraid of his taking her position, Draco is fighting his protection but needs it. He's become very bound up with their family, whether either side wants it or not.
Whether that means he was bound up with them before I agree is in no way canonical. He has a history with them, obviously, with Bellatrix and Sirius. Reg was a DE around the same time and they were at school together. He greets Narcissa as someone he's met before, at least, and he is an old friend of her husband's and her kids' teacher. I tend to think they've never been this bound up with each other (though Snape could still have had feelings about their family before now, considering his relationship with Sirius). But now that they are it's like Snape is the man of the Black House.
