Oh god yes, exactly. I mean, one big reason is that usually the skills involved in successful Original fiction are just not the same stuff fanfic often deals in. There's plenty of ways in which JKR, for all her own flaws as a writer, leaves these guys in the dust, including the ones claiming to write with respect. The credit for the creation is all hers--and at least she can just write what she wants without pretending she's trying to channel the superior mind of someone else.
And yet on the other hand, oh yes she would probably have trouble if she tried to write fanfic of her own work. I remember after OotP I thought the one good thing about Ginny was that no one could ever again say it was badfic to say, "So and so came back different in fifth year..."
