it reminds me of the Scarlet Letter

It's funny that you mentioned this as I was ranting to my husband today about Hermione in essence forcing her own version of a scarlet letter onto Marietta. I really, really want this matter addressed to my satisfaction....and a "she deserved it" doesn't cut it.

Hermione stole her ideas from the deatheaters and now Marietta bears her mark as Harry bears Voldemort's.
What really gets me about this entire issue is how much more invested she is in the punitive rather than the preventive. She is intent on revenging herself of a betrayal instead of forestalling one.

I realize I've gone off on a tangent from your essay.

As concerns Draco's bigotry, it bothers me that Draco's blunt approach is used to excuse all the more subtle and pervasive ones.

We don't want a squib so let us drop a babe from a window....if he doesn't bounce, we didn't want him anyway. We don't talk about the non-magical uncle or cousin...being lesser, they shame us.

Centaurs are just horses. Let's make them do our dirty work for us as they are only animals after all.

House elfs? Slavery is wrong. Let's make decisions for them as they are obviously incapable of being involved in choices which affect them directly.

I'm in a mood.
