I think the movie really does probably bother people because of that. I mean, it's not that people are just stupid or don't get it, but sometimes you want an easy answer. Like I said to Reena above, I think it's great when people have strong reactions to it, I just don't like them to re-write the movie to suit their answer. The movie does present the men as hurting their wives who don't deserve it (especially Alma!) and I think the movie is okay with people thinking Ennis is a jerk and sympathizing with her instead. It's just that Ennis not cheating on her really wouldn't have solved the problem. The right choice would be to not love Jack. Not marrying Alma in the first place would have probably been better too, but again, it's not like he's marrying her under false pretenses.
