The best thing about Snape's character is that his tragedy is that he really doesn't seem to see the consequences of his actions. That I can definitely relate to. It might, of course, be that what happened to Snape affected him more deeply than what happened to Lupin did to him, and he really can't heal from it. Which, when I think of it like that, is a bit sad for him...
