Oh yes, that's totally it. And it's so funny in HBP that we're literally in the place of the supporting character and so not able to see the whole lead story. We just get this person who barely knows Draco seeing the signs of what he's doing. Even Harry-the-detective who's trying to figure out what's going on doesn't ever have that satisfying confrontation with him. He just sees the one Draco has with Dumbledore, making Harry that much more of an outsider. As I've harped on before, even the place where Harry literally pushes himself into the story with Sectumsempra we never see. Harry shuts down against Draco once that happens instead of allowing himself to be closer to him because of that scene.
