I think that's part of what makes the Sectumsempra scene so grey. Of course Harry could have used a different spell--and I can't help but feel it's got significance on a lot of levels that he chooses such a bad one that Snape created when he was an angry young teenager. You can't say that Harry did it on purpose, but I don't think either you can say it was completely innocent. If Harry was on trial I imagine a good cross-examination would make him look pretty bad: so what did you think it was going to do? The boy was throwing a Crucio for all you know--so obviously you thought this would take care of him more than anything else you know, right? So when Mr. Malfoy escalated the fight to something really dangerous you expect us to believe you went for what you thought might be an eyelash growing spell?
