What's odd is I remember some interview where she was like 'I wanted the wand-switching to be a casual no-big deal thing'. Which is weird, because obviously it is (most people I know actually had to reread to notice it at all) but the way it's discussed by the characters is not really, more like it's some epic battle where Harry 'overpowered' Draco through sheer strength of will or something. And not in a 'We're supposed to laugh affectionately at how seriously Harry always takes himself' (as if!) And yes, what's the point of having it be Draco at all when he doesn't come into the storyline? (I've been lazier than ever about replying to HP discussions post-DH since there's so many things wrong with it all I have the energy for is mockery!)
And it seems to frustrate people who hate the Malfoys as much as people who love them. The fans aren't particularly satisfied because the story is so half-assed, but then people who had contempt for them seemed to be hoping that there would be some kind of punishment for them (I did kind of LOL at some of the outraged comments like 'Why aren't they in Azkaban? They totally broke the law!' like a huge battle is going to be overseen by an independent judge or something. Shouldn't Molly be soul-torn and imprisoned by now by those terms? The Malfoys are pretty useless in DH, if they got punished it would have to be for their pasts, which would seem an even more childish writing choice - sure, you didn't fight for the bad side, ultimately, but remember that time when Draco laughed at Ginny's valentine? BURN THEM!) It's like Wormtail - obviously there aren't many people rooting for him (but then he makes a better example because people can't rush to defend JKR with 'You must have been thinking of sexy fanfic Peter, or else wanting him to be the hero! There was never any sign anything would ever happen to him!') but there was a lot of room there laid out by the story for him to go either way, helping out Harry or else having some big dramatic death, whereas the way JKR finished it was just an afterthought. Which yeah, might be a punishment thing, but it still comes down to: what's the point? It doesn't make anyone say 'Wow, after such a boring scene I see now that cowardice is completely contemptible - oh, and that people don't really change. That would be unrealistic and way too hopeful, unlike OBHWF living in a happy shiny world of rainbows and puppies and ickle-wickle babakins! - in a way I didn't after the six other books and nine million obnoxious interviews! That Pettigrew/Malfoy/Zacharias sure does suck! When and not if I marry and procreate, I hope it's with a gallant guy like Harry!' Why not just torture them? (Then again, all the deaths in DH were pathetic, not to mention the actual torture - Montague probably got a rougher time than anyone in this book. Hell, Harry's endless Super Serious Quidditch Injuries were more shocking than 'La la la, Tonks/George-or-Fred/Red-Shirted Extra just died!')
