To me, it is quite clear that this whole Elder Wand thing was tacked on and completely un-thought-out. Yes, totally.
The only thing that the Elder Wand BS really *did* for Jo was enable her to address the fact that she's never liked Shape I don't quite get how you make that out. Snape was killed by Voldemort, because he mistakenly thought that would make him the master of the elder wand - but the focus lay on the Harry-Draco-Voldemort triangle (what an image! cough). While I agree she definitly downplayed the importance of Snape and Slytherins in general, I don't see she needed the Elder wand business to do it (she did it all through the book whenever possible.
