You know, for some reason reading this it made me think of Omar from The Wire. Who isn't a woman, obviously, but he is a gay man. Not just a gay man but a gay man who seems to have been the most popular character on a show with hundreds of characters, because he was the most cool. And yet I tend to hear about him a lot less than I hear about other gay characters. I almost wonder why that is. I mean, it's not like people aren't ever aware of him. I can remember at least once in some article a passing reference to how he was the most amazing gay character ever. Maybe part of the problem is you can't really take many lessons from him that you can just apply to another character.

But also god, yes, about everything running on popularity. Whatever's the thing of the moment and people picking up something, examining it and discarding it if it doesn't interest them. Like I think you mentioned once about just TV shows where it's like you can talk about the list of acceptable shows to blog about, or you can choose a show that you write defenses about as your personal thing, like you're intentionally giving a different reading.

Also it just quickly makes everything less fun, an idea that probably sounds terribly shallow, but it adds this level of stress to things and makes it like the only power you can have in interacting with something is in recognizing how it's trying to screw you or how it's failing.
