Isn't that true of fanfiction full stop? We've all seen plenty of in-universe fic that seems wildly out of character. And we all have different things in our mind that are at the core of the character.
Of course! And the more different aspects are recognisable from canon, including the outward trappings, the more people will find "their" core characteristic intact, right?
But also, how many varieties there are within humanity that can be encompassed and just as strange as anything that is nonhuman even if it's less PC to say that.
Well, yes, but that's back to what sistermagpie says above - at the end of the day, they're all creations of a human mind, and represent something human. Aliens can represent many different things; I don't think it's less legitimate to focus on how people deal with differences rather than on finding an underlying sameness.
