Some thoughts on the homophobia issue

I'm not really going to talk about the issue that started this--the whole disliking slash=homophobia or not, because that's being brilliantly discussed elsewhere! But there's a sort of side issue I think is interesting I thought I'd bring up. A couple of places in this debate I've seen an analogy made between racism and homophobia. People have asked the perfectly reasonable question of why people feel it's okay to go to a messageboard and announce they hate slash when the same person probably wouldn't go to a messageboard and say they hate African American Literature. I do think there's a reason for it, though. Or at least one reason. Probably there are more than one.
