I just read several conversations about academics and fandom and how it can ruin stories, both fanfic and escapist novels, that aren't created to be analyzed to death. There were references to this being like dissecting something that was alive so that it is now dead. I recall references to how the subject of English in college is what makes people not read for pleasure. Several people agreed with this premise.
Full disclosure: I was an English major. I majored in English because I love to read and talk about/analyze stories. I loved English class, loved a lot of the books I read in class, loved analyzing them in class and in papers, and continue to read for pleasure. ( I'm not sure how analyzing any story would kill my love for reading. )
