Oh yes, you couldn't throw a rock in the goth scene when I was in without hitting a neopagan who loooooooved The Wicker Man. Of course, these were also people who generally had no problem with being seen as alignment Campy Evil, at least before Columbine, when suddenly we were all supposed to take up knitting to prove that we weren't evil at all. But that's another story.
I think you put your finger right on what's so compelling about the film. I am filled with dread about the remake. If nothing else, the music will probably be a limp joke compared to the brilliant soundtrack of the original.
