That was so thought provoking! Great essay.

I've always gone with the "cold blue flame at the center of the Light" theory. That the Light and the Old Ones must be a bit ruthless in order to achieve a higher good. Or not ruthless, but putting the good of many over the good of one. One of my favorite moments is when Will explains this to--is it Owen Davies?--and Davies says "I would always choose the one over the many." And Will miserably says "I wish I could, but I can't." or words to that effect.

But you raise an interesting point--that they aren't cold or ruthless for the higher good, they just see things a different way because of what they are and what needs to be accomplished. That this "coldness" is in fact protectiveness. Will doesn't let Stephen keep the memory because he doesn't want to ruin his relationship with his brother--doesn't want to be alienated from him, and doesn't want Stephen involved in something he isn't ready for because he could get hurt (see Will's sister Mary in TDIR).

If you read back through your entries and eventually see this post, this is me, Constance. It was great catching up with you today!
