My personal take on the relationship between the Old Ones and the humans was that it was analagous to that of adults and children. The Old Ones have experience, knowledge and abilities far beyond the reach of mortals, and certain things could be explained but not necessarily understood in the same way by mortals. I especially agree with your interpretation of what happened with Hawkins--he agreed but didn't really understand what he was agreeing to until it was too late.
