ext_6866: (What's this?)
Just wanted to agree with this too--exactly. Even if you have a ship where you can believeably suggest an actual attraction (as I think you can with H/D on Draco's part) you have to deal with the whole personality. You especially have to deal with exactly why he is attracted to *this boy* really, and given his animosity started when he was 11 suggesting he fell in love with him at first sight is a little silly. To me it seems more interesting *why* Draco needs Harry's approval and attention so much. If he's in love with him that's fine, but it still doesn't explain the half of it. I think there's a similar dismissal of Harry's feelings sometimes too, going too far in the direction of Harry's not caring about Malfoy and just wanting to be left alone, ignoring the fact that Malfoy actually does represent something to Harry that bothers him. He's not chasing him around trying to get to him, but don't cut off the parts of him that need to put Malfoy in his place or get pleasure out of seeing him put down. There's much more interesting stuff in that pairing, for me, than just the idea that they secretly like each other because WHY do they secretly like each other and WHY is it so awful for them to consider liking or being anything like each other?

I suppose the part of fanon!Draco's super smoothness that does come from canon is just the idea that Draco can make Harry angry and lose control--for instance, on the Quidditch pitch where Harry. Harry sees that Draco is trying to get to him in most of their scenes, yet at times he's successful at it anyway. But isolating that one part doesn't get into half the questions about why Draco does this, how Harry gets to Draco etc. In fact, that's one of the interesting things about the pairing in general, really, the way there seems to be an idea that either one character or the other is "in control" while the other is foundering--I don't know if it's the same with H/S.
