Well precisely! It's like people arguing that the DA's actions at the end of the book were just 'defending Harry'.

Exactly--particularly when you add in what may be the author intent, which is to give us a feel-good ending by bashing the Slytherins. Let's face it, everybody LOVES it when Malfoy shows his ferret face so that the Trio can hex him. And the end of that scene has nothing to do with defending Harry: "Phew! That was close! Are you okay Harry? Wow, that was scary. I hope we don't have to ever be in that situation again."

No, the end of that scene is, "Woo-hoo! Stuff them in the luggage rack. HA HA HA! I'm so glad we got to do that. Even if I'm a character Malfoy's never spoken a word to I enjoy being able to hex him with a group of people. In fact, I'd like to watch him be humiliated in front of his mother (rich as they are, which makes me jealous and makes them deserve this even more)!"

And also, I love the little slide over last year's incident. This year it's, "Oh, HORRORS! Malfoy ambushed Harry in the train! He was unarmed! He was outnumbered! And he'd done nothing to deserve it! (Well, he put Draco's father in jail but we know he deserved it so Malfoy's anger is completely irrelevent!) It was SELF-DEFENSE!!"

When last year that's pretty much what happened to the Slytherins--they were outnumbered, unarmed, had not attacked anyone. Only then the defense was that my goodness, he'd said something nasty about Cedric! Even though that scene had nothing to do with Cedric because nobody much cared about him personally but the Trio doesn't like to have Voldemort's triumph rubbed in their face! He just made them so angry they HAD to attack him. And since they're the good guys their anger is ALWAYS relevent!
