My biggest peeve is when a poster will react to someone's opposing argument with "How can you say that?" or "How can you know what it's really like to be depressed, picked on, fill in the blank?" For one thing it's just rude to presume how one should feel about certain characters, or anything really.
Yes, it is. I also think it's rude to assume that the person who don't like this character for whatever reason don't know what it's like to be depressed, picked on or whatever, because really, how can we know about the personal experiences of everyone we meet on the Internet? It's perfectly possible to dislike a character who's suffered from bullying, depression or whatever, even if you have yourself. Like SM says below, sometimes the persons who have been bullied are the ones who'll say "get over it".
I admit, I project too. I admitted in yesterday's thread about Molly, that I feel protective of because of my own family history. And JKR projects too. She obviously had issues with boys like Draco growing up, which is why she seems to delight in humiliating him so.
I do think most of us project -at least from one time to another- but I think the key here is realising that you do. That makes all the difference. Unfortunately, I'm not sure JKR realises that -it doesn't really sound like it, in her constant advice of young girls to "go for the nice guy". But then again, maybe she does.
