I can't understand why someone would write an entire essay on why they hate someone and why everyone else should hate that person too.(and I know I'm probably going to get flamed for this but I see more vocal character hate on the Sytherin fans side than I do with anyone else.)

I aboslutely feel the same way about this. In fact, when I first join the fandom 2 years ago, I was a slytherin-only fans who always defend characters like Snape and Draco whenever I see people bashed them irrationally. But then as many of the Slytherin fan side get more vocal and irrational, writing long essays (some disguise as lit-crit) to bash the "good" characters over and over again, sometimes even twisting canon facts or take things way out of context in order to make some points how "suck" or morally wrong the good characters (and people who love them) are. Some fans even mock and personal insult people who like these good characters (I swear that once I read someone said "all Slytherin fans are more mature, read better and logical while all Gryfindor fans are idiot retard fangirls who can't read"). I notice this trend especially post-Ootp (because many Slytherin fans are outrage about JKR's treatment of them in the book? And her comments in the interviews?) These over-board irrational hate on the good characters and their fans actually made me began to appreciate the good characters! It got a reverse effect on me.I never thought I would actually come to appreciate Hagrid, and I grew to love Sirius and Lupin and the Weasleys whom I once feel indifferent to or even dislike. I don't even consider myself Slytherin fans anymore. This has made me realized how pointless it really is to hate fictional characters. So I don't hate or dislike any characters anymore.
Like pariforma said up there, these characters all has roles to play and serve specific functions in the story. so they had to act acertain way according to the plan. They're not real. So that's why I think it's pointless (for myself) to invest emotion to "hate" some fictional character who's created by someone else to serve a specific role in her/his story. I rather reserve that emotion, time and energy in something real instead. I also agree with cadesama, a lot of character or ship hatred are fandom-induced. I've seen people hate characters due to the way they're portrayed in fanon (ex: leatherpant sexgod!Draco), but that character isn't really like that in canon in the first place, yet he/she get hated and bashed for being like that fanon counterpart.
