A lot of character hate is unreasonable, e.g. 'I hate so-and-so because they get in the way of my ship!'. I think, a lot of the time when people say that they can't understand character hate, this is the kind of hate they mean.
I agree with you. I tend to go overboard defending Tonks because so much of the hatred directed at her is for silly reasons - "I hate her because she's new!" or "I hate her because people ship her with Remus and that gets in the way of my Ship!" Sometimes one just wants to stick up for unfairly-bashed characters. And sometimes people's reasons for hating a particular character are just pointless. I can accept people not liking Tonks because they find her personality annoying, but I can't accept the "because she's NEWWWW!!!" hate.
