LOL--I am exactly the same way. I might start out feeling one thing but when people start going too far in the other direction I always start tugging back in the opposite way. The thing that probably gets me the most uptight is the twisting of canon facts or taking things out of context, along with the just plain embarassing thing of people declaring themselves superior because they're fans of character X instead of character Y. That's just like...Dude, if you want to be superior go out and do something worthwhile because it's not going to come from choosing the right fictional character to like.

But the changing of facts is probably the thing that drives me crazy, whatever the reason for it--whether it's to promote a theory of what's going on or offer a critical interpretation. In fact, recently I was driven up the wall by that completely innocuous post comparing LOTR characters to HP characters because it completely twisted all the characters of both canons and said false things just to pretend they were more similar than they are! But in fandom it seems done most often to promote one character over another and it drives me crazy. I think that's why, for instance, I always end up going over and over the Buckbeak scene, because it seems like people have such a hard time presenting that accurately because it's more ambiguous than anyone wants. Either Draco is spearing Buckbeak until the poor creature can't help but fight back to defend himself while Hagrid is doing everything he can to stop him, or Draco's picking daisies when Hagrid unleashes a monster and tells him to sic with no warning. It seems like people are only changing small things, but it's always part of a larger idea and you just have to wonder: why can't you present your case without changing things?
