Well, the life debt wasn't there to help out Snape, because fate had another way of redeeming Snape up its sleeve, in the form of joining the Death Eaters and realising what a stupid lark that was. So yeah, it may have racked up more resentment, but fate seems to have a bloody quirky sense of humour when it comes to making people do their tasks.
