Heh--this is the first time I've ever realized there's anything I *could* have in common with with the kid, though in a very different way. But yes, that is what it's like, having somebody tell you you're coming across badly when you have no idea. It's one thing if you're accidentally sounding stupid, but it's weird when you're coming across in a way you never would have imagined.
And also rather funny when you think about it. Oops. It makes me wish (as I sometimes do) that just for a bit I could be, like, a minor character in a Henry James novel so I could come in and get summed up perfectly in a paragraph and see myself from the outside very starkly. Though maybe I really wouldn't like what I saw...
