I had another look at the movie, and actually, it does make a difference. As the timeline (in the EE) is, there are three days in which Gollum, Sam and Frodo are on their own again; first, there's the night in which Sam overhears Gollum talking to himself, second, there's the night in that weirdly shaped cave, and third, the night at Minas Morgul with that great big light thing (what *is* that?). But if Gandalf and Pippin hadn't stayed in Minas Tirith for that one night, yes, Faramir's line would have made more sense. It still doesn't match the other storylines, though. :-)
