A hobby whose mechanics bore you isn't a very good choice of hobby.

Oh, well. :)

I do okay photography, okay enough to please myself, anyway (and isn't that what hobbies are for?). I have yet to learn anything more technical than "the smallest possible f-stop gives you the most depth of field." That's because it's an art of seeing as much as it is an art of technique. More, I'd say.

Similarly, writing is an art of feeling, or I couldn't do it at all -- never having had a class in creative writing. I learned how to write by asking a friend how to start, since I had less than zero idea.

"Do you see them in your head?" she asked.

"Yes."

"Where are they? What time is it? What are they doing? Write that down," she said.

"Okay."

"Now, ask yourself -- 'What happens next?' Write that down, too."

That was it. Mechanics can mean less than many people like to think. What difference does it really make that a bunch of kids are sullying fanfic's (formerly nonexistent) reputation? Everybody's got to start somewhere.

And yes, the pelicans are mine. Although the photo does look much nicer in its original format. It's too cramped with so much of the horizontal chopped off. I'm not saying it's an incredible shot, but it's certainly passable.
