I went to see Spamalot tonight and loved it--there's not much to say except: Show Funny. People laugh. Hank Azaria and Tim Curry were both out--HA for a while, TC just tonight because that's my luck with these things. When the understudy King Arthur brought an audience member up on the stage he sheepishly told the man he "hoped he wasn't the President of the Tim Curry Fan Club."

A cool thing earlier was my mother and I were having dinner and the guy at the next table bought it for us! Just for no reason, although he seemed pretty happy with the lady he was with so maybe he was just spreading the love. When the waitress asked if he was sure he didn't want a sweet after dinner he said she was his sweet, always. I know, gag. Lucky I didn't make a face or he might not have paid for my dinner! Hurray!

My mother is halfway through her audio CD of HBP. You must understand that if this woman has one amazing talent it is the ability to get any name, no matter how simple, wrong. Sometimes she'll say a name correctly in the beginning of a sentence and change it to something else in the second half of a sentence just to impress you. Well, HP is just a bounty of names, all waiting to be mangled! So listening to her talk about it is like listening to some strange AU.

MotherMagpie:I've never liked Dobey.

SisterMagpie: Dobby?

MM: Yes, he reminds me of Golem from Lord of the Rings.

SM: Gollum. Dobby, not Kreacher, who belonged to Sirius?

MM: I thought Sirius was the Potions Teacher.

SM: That's Severus Snape.

MM: Oh. Those names are too much alike. Sirius was the one who was in Azbakan.

SM: Azkaban.

MM: What's wrong with poor Tonk?

SM: Tonks?

MM: She's pining away. I think she's in love with Bill Wurzley.

SM: Bill Weasley.

MM: Yes, but he's going to marry Femme.

SM: Fleur.

Later, in the Schubert Theater...

MM: So Tink isn't in love with Bill?

SM: giving up with the corrections Uh, no, Tink isn't in love with Bill.

MM: It's not Ron, is it?

SM: ...

MM: Who else is there? Not the vampire!

SM: The vampire?

MM: Yes, she must be in love with the Vampire. Lupus!

I refrained from telling her whether or not she was right, though I could make a case either way.

She thinks Tink is in love with Lupus the Vampire. Does that count as an accurate guess?

You know it really depends on whether Lupus the Vampire is supposed to be Remus Lupin, Sanguinarius or whatever his name is the actual Vampire, or Lucius Malfoy, who dresses like a vampire, or at least like a Vampire player.

And with your mother it really could be any one of them.

According to Luna (and maybe *that's* another candidate for "Lupus"), Scrimgeour is a vampire, too.

The plot thickens!

Okay, I just realized your mother figured it out! Tonks really *is* Tink...Tinky Wink, to be precise. And as we all know, the Teletubbies are all gay (I mean, Tink carries a purse OMG!). So..."Tink"/"Lupus" is actually a slash pairing (m/m) and all those people who've been complaining that JKR took away Teh Gay were *wrong*.

Personally, I'm wondering if it could be a marriage of convenience. You know, a queer guy and a gueer gal taking the vows to get a little bit of respect that married couples get.

Your mom has just killed me using laughing gas. You should write about her some more ;-)

Heh--people in real life always want to hear about her too.

Poor Lupus, as if he didn't have problems enough already!

I know! You'd think it couldn't get worse, and then you get Lupus.

The thought that Tonks could be in love with Ron literally made me fall off my chair. You should post a continuation of 'MotherMagpie is listening to HBP, part two.'
ext_6866: (Wha...?)

From: [identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com

I was surprised by that too. But she got to Lupus eventually, so I guess she was on the right track.

I will definitely try to remember to ask her about the book when she gets up to it. She only recently listened to OotP. She likes Neville a lot and thought he was the half-blood prince (which led to a confusing discussion on who is Pureblood and who is Muggleborn), and was dismayed by someone once asking if Neville's father was Peter Piper.

From: [identity profile] niwatorimegami.livejournal.com

Man, if Remus HAD lupus, that would just be insult to injury! And also, I wonder what would happen if he were bitten by the vampire. Why did the pairing Fenrir/Sanguini just leap into my head?
ext_6866: (Boo.)

From: [identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com

I know--he has lupus and he's a vampire! The guy just can't get a break!

This conversation does kind of suggest some good plot bunnies, though...

I heard that Alan Tudyk was taking over for Hank Azaria this summer. Is this so?

Your mother makes me laugh first thing in the morning! :-D

Also, you make me miss New York.

I'm glad about the laughter--sad about your missing New York.:-(

From: [identity profile] ishtar79.livejournal.com

Yes, she must be in love with the Vampire. Lupus!

*dies and is dead*

Your mother´s accidental AU is actually funnier and more imaginative than many fics out there. Please share more of her thoughts on HP, we could all use the funny. :D

ext_6866: (Might as well be in Chinese)

From: [identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com

Isn't it?

Well, I shared with Adela her thoughts after OotP: she thought Neville was the Half-Blood Prince, did not know Hermione was Muggleborn, but did think Harry was a Muggleborn. She was disturbed by someone asking Rowling if Neville was the son of Peter Piper.

Heh. My mum's favourite character is actually Dobby, believe it or not. (...I don't know. What is wrong with my family? Sis' is Tom the Innkeeper and the Sorting Hat, both from the films.)

Just for no reason, although he seemed pretty happy with the lady he was with so maybe he was just spreading the love.

Aw. That's so nice.
ext_6866: (Yum!)

From: [identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com

I was pleased with my mother not liking Dobby! Though she seemed to like Ginny, which was problematic.

Aw. That's so nice.

Wasn't it? I've never had anybody do something like that--and this was no cheap dinner!

The funny thing is that I didn't even reflect upon many of these. I tend to mix names and "titles" (or whatever you should call the vampire/werewolf mix-up) too, if it's something I'm not terribly invested in...
ext_6866: (I'm looking at you)

From: [identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com

She claims that she does this because she listens to these books on CD, so it's not like reading them. However, I know that she messes up every name and title, so I don't believe her.

ROFL! This is the second funny parent conversation I've read on LJ in just a couple of days. I'm going to start collecting them!

I think JKR needs to talk with your mum if she ever runs out of ideas!
Could her synopsis of HBP possibly be an example of that there ... whatdayacallit ... "fuzzy logic" theory?

So... is "Spamalot" a musical retelling of "Holy Grail", or something else? REALLY want to see it. How much are tickets running these days?
ext_6866: (I'll just watch from up here)

From: [identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com

Yup, it's Monty Python and the Holy Grail-based. It's a hot ticket right now--orchestra is going to be over $100.00.:-/
