First, I saw the best movie last night: Captain Blood. Of course I knew who Errol Flynn was and probably had seen Robin Hood at least, but I was not prepared for how much I was going to be in love with this guy by the end. He's just incredible--and he dresses up in fabulous outfits in every scene: capes, hats, puffy shirts, rolled up shirts, jodhpurs, hats with feathers. He begins the movie as a doctor, then becomes a slave who appears to work on the J.Peterman Plantation, his clothes are just that fabulous, then a pirate captain, then his final job I won't give away

Oh, and one funny fandom-moment was that the very first time he appears he's in a dressing gown in the middle of the night. He walked into the hallway and I thought, "Why, hello, Fanon!Snape! What are you doing in this movie?"

I am now planning to rent The Sea Hawk. It’s research. The prettiness is just extra. Also, on a little sociological note, 30's movies always seem so concerned with the Battle of the Sexes, so it was interesting the way there was this whole structure going on with Captain Blood and Arabella (Olivia de Havilland) about not wanting to be bought by the other or accept favors.

That gets into another general male/female question that's inspired by Nightwing #93 but is really about fanfic in general. This goes behind the cut. )

It's me again, but I couldn't stand it. I want to do the meme too.

1) Copy and paste this: yourusername into your journal.
2) Replace [] with <>

sistermagpie

The book meme:
1. Take five books off your bookshelf.
2. Book #1 -- first sentence
3. Book #2 -- last sentence on page fifty
4. Book #3 -- second sentence on page one hundred
5. Book #4 -- next to the last sentence on page one hundred fifty
6. Book #5 -- final sentence of the book
7. Make the five sentences into a paragraph.

The paragraph:
The feast was a thing Liam Rhenford had never thought to see in Taralon and because of that, and his general feeling of being an outsider, he allowed himself a little too much of the hot, spiced wine. Such mishandling of the most sensational murder of all might, if the killer was ever caught, materially affect the outcome of any future trial and might possibly be the flaw in the case which could lead to his acquittal. "We shall have to call the police, and I don't want anything touched before they arrive. Off!" Rose said the branch wasn't worrying her in the least. She was not her daughter.

The books:
1. Fanuilh by Daniel Hood
2. The Dark is Rising Sequence by Susan Cooper
3. The Complete Jack the Ripper by Donald Rumbelow
4. I Capture The Castle by Dodie Smith
5. The Circus Fire by Stewart O'Nan
