1. What books are your comfort reading -- the ones you slink back to in times of stress?
Lord of the Rings. The Dark is Rising.
2. What was your favorite book as a child, and why?
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. I loved Will Stanton, I guess. Loved the idea of his being young on the outside and old on the outside; ordinary on the outside and special on the inside...? There's 5 books in the series, my favorites being TDiR and The Grey King.
3. What was your favorite book as an adolescent, and why?
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury. I really like to spend time in that world.
4. What is the most-unread category of books gathering dust on your bookshelf -- the books you've bought but just never got around to reading?
Most of those are ones people gave me that I didn't really want, unfortunately. I've learned I'm not really that into sci-fi/fantasy, despite having some huge favorites.
5. What kind of books would you like to say you read, but never do?
Current bestsellers.
6. What's the oddest book you ever read?
Jude the Obscure. For that one thing that happens that made me go back and re-read the page over and over saying, "WTF???"
I've read much weirder, but it was usually unpublished. Some that stuff would curl your toes.
7. What book were you never able to get through, despite the recommendations of people you respect?
David Copperfield. Love Dickens, can't get through that one.
8. What's the book it took you a couple of tries to get into, but was as good as promised once you finally made it?
Lord of the Rings by JRRT. Started it twice at around 11 and 12, then finally got past chapter 2 at 19 and that was it!
9. What's your favorite short story . . . or do you even have one?
Probably "The Rest Cure" by Saki or something by Ray Bradbury.
10. The desert island. Three books (and collected works don't count; if you want *Lord of the Rings* it'll cost you all three slots). Go:
Rememberence of Things Past by Marcel Proust (hey, I need something that takes a while to get through!)
Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones.
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper.
If nothing goes wrong I should FINALLY be seeing Pirates of the Caribbean tomorrow. Oh, and Tuesday P and I watched The Scarlet Pimpernel with Leslie Howard. Oh my god what a hysterical movie. Leslie Howard is a dashing hero who disguises himself by pretending to be the gayest man in England--and I mean that in the best way possible. You just have to see him do his poem that he wrote all by himself:
"They seek him here,
they seek him there.
Those Frenchies seek him everywhere!
Is he in heaven?
Or is he in hell?
That damned* elusive Pimpernel!"
* prounced "demmed"
Totally hysterical. I plan to show P the Blackadder version asap.

Fun book, too.
Have never seen Blackadder's Pimpernel, but I can imagine.
Favorite Saki: "Laura." Or maybe "Gabriel-Ernest."

I was trying to think of my favorite Saki stories...probably "The Rest Cure" or "Sredni Vashtar" or "The Open Window." I love all of those.

"Pirates" is loads of fun. I'm going to go see it AGAIN, partly just to see the "Hidalgo" preview with Viggo AGAIN.
Are you familiar with the musical "Scarlet Pimpernel"? There is a fantastic musical version...I saw the thing in L.A. 4 times, completely besotted with "Percy" who was played to perfection by this wonderful actor/singer. Talk about swooning. If you are interested, I'll make you a tape of the music and you can see if you like it. It's one of my all-time favorites and you know I like musicals!

i'll be eager to read your "review" of this disney joyride -- it'll give an idea as to whether i should make the effort to see it in the theater or just wait until it comes to cable
