because i know you like to get things right...

...popular observance during this holiday is eating apples dipped in honey, a symbol of our wish for a sweet new year. This was the second Jewish religious practice I was ever exposed to (the first one: lighting Chanukkah candles), and I highly recommend it. It's yummy. We also dip bread in honey (instead of the usual practice of sprinkling salt on it) at this time of year for the same reason.

Another popular practice of the holiday is Tashlikh ("casting off"). We walk to flowing water, such as a creek or river, on the afternoon of the first day and empty our pockets into the river, symbolically casting off our sins. This practice is not discussed in the Bible, but is a long-standing custom.

I do like to get things right!

I think maybe what happened that time with me was that we were given the bread and honey and then the person explained the tossing of things into the water but that we might not want to toss stuff from our pockets? Or, come to think of it, maybe we were all in costume so didn't have costumes anyway?

Anyway, you see, this is why when you want to know about Jewish customes you shouldn't ask a shiksa! (Did I even spell that right? Have no idea...)

It's spelled with an 'e' at the end - shikse. Anyway, shana tova gam lach....

What would I do without you? I wouldn't even know how to spell myself.:-)

We have in the past wondered if Marigold was Jewish, btw, and she says shana tova gam lach back.

although marigold sounds an awful lot like a little old jewish man lately, i don't think she is -- just look @ all that lovely blonde fluffy straight

btw: do you know who "anonymous" -- i'm curious & also don't have a clue as to what shana tova gam lach means.

Oh my gosh--I totally didn't even look at the sender and I thought I was talking to you. Anonymous must be wondering who this Marigold is that I casually mentioned.

So thank you, Anonymous, for that information, but I don't know what the phrase means either!

tonite @ services i uncovered the meaning of gam lach

it means: "same to you"

it's an appropriate response when someone says to you: "shana tovah"

i found the information on the last page of the RH/YK Mazor [that's the special prayer we use just for these holidays] -- the book has an entire page devoted to proper holiday greetings -- what you say to someone changes depending on when you are saying it -- before after RH
