Hope everybody had a good week, whether celebrating Thanksgiving or no. I went home, and came back for some post-turkey beer with [livejournal.com profile] q_spade and [livejournal.com profile] teratologist.

Last night I surprised myself by getting myself out of the house for an 11pm show at Birdland. A guy I met a week ago was performing--he's a friend of friends. Some of the songs he did were original, and he wasn't happy with some of his lyrics. My friend announced Cousin Magpie writes lyrics! (She calls me Cousin Magpie.) There were a flurry of e-mails for the rest of the day. Anyway, I went to the show all dismissive about my contribution but sure enough once he sang lines I wrote I practically jumped out of seat to tell everybody I helped write that song and did they like it? So much for being cool about stuff like that. Anyway, the show itself was great--two performances sold out. Even better I saw people I knew there so I didn't have to sit by myself--I'd brought a notebook along so I could look like a music critic or something if I was sitting alone. The only bad part was of course the subway deciding to not go anywhere near my stop at 1:30am, so I had to walk a lot, but all in all it was worth it.

Btw, I also had the weirdest dream last night. It was a combination of Harry Potter, the Flintstones and Dexter. Sort of one leading into the other.

Cousin Magpie writes lyrics!

Hooray for collaboration!!! :D

What a joy for you to have been there to hear the song and know you played a part in its creation.

It was cool! And good that I had sort of forgotten about the specifics until I heard them, so I wasn't weirded out waiting for it.

*is envious*

I didn't know you wrote lyrics! Or for that matter, that RL people called you Magpie. (The 'Cousin' things a bit twee, isn't it, even if you were cousins?) Learn something new every day!

It was a combination of Harry Potter, the Flintstones and Dexter. Sort of one leading into the other.

Huh, I had this image of live-action meeting cartoons, like in 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'

Not too many people call me Magpie in real life--this person kind of hands out nicknames. The Cousin is because I'm sort of an honorary cousin in her family.:-)

It was a really weird dream. The HP part was actually the most pleasant. It wasn't actually HP, but I kept comparing it to it in my head.

I adapted a musical once, doing the book and lyrics. That's mostly where all my experience comes from. Still, it just comes basically down to thinking of words, and I can do that!

You have to a be a very talented writer. You write those brilliant essays, and now it turns out you can write lyrics as well. I have a great respect for people who can write lyrics, possibly because I know I can't.

I wish I had more money and wasn't afraid I would get a seizure in the airplane so I could come and meet you three, too. ;-)

I don't know whether I'm that talented at it, but it is pretty fun!

Maybe someday I'll come to where you are!

Woohoo! That's great. Writing lyrics is hard - they have to scan just so for the music. Has the friend of friends any plans to record these songs now?

I'd brought a notebook along so I could look like a music critic or something if I was sitting alone...
Notebooks are incredibly handy things - part novel, part shopping list, part shield against judging eyes. :D

I'm sure he will record them at some point. He already did one CD.:-)

Notebooks indeed are very handy no matter what you're doing!

I had a dream that my boyfriedn had had a child with Cho Chang, and I was just finding out about it and wondering whehter this had happened before I got together with him or after, but really upset about it anyway.

I was so relieved when I woke up and realized that that wasn't actually happening...
