So this guy I know said something kind of interesting about

I'm really loving this show. So far every character interests me, especially the way since you've got a bunch of people on this desert island everything immediately reverts back to traditional gender roles. There's very few women, and three of the ones there are already mostly defined as being all about mating and reproduction. I left off Kate because she's been pretty active but even she's obviously the Alpha female already sort of seen as Jack's mate.

But with the guys, I love the way they're all having to scramble and find ways of being useful otherwise they're just destroyed. Last week two of the most useless found themselves--Michael turned out to know something about construction and Charlie, whose bardic talents were cheaped in the real world and so far useless in this world, finally took a step towards taking responsibility for himself instead of blaming circumstances for all of his bad decisions (complete with handy moth imagery!).

Anyway, here's the thing C said. We were talking about Sayid and he pointed out something P and I had completely missed because, being female, our main thought about Sayid is that HE'S SUCH HOTTIEE OMG!!111!1 According to C, Jack's the natural leader and Sayid's the bungler. I had never noticed this but that's what C, a man, zeroed in on. Everything poor Sayid tries goes wrong. Jack's taking care of things right and left and Sayid still hasn't been able to get that transmitter working. Anyway, just thought that was a really interesting guy perspective.

Hmmm.

Interesting. Jack seems to be taking on the role of ensuring day-to-day survival, while it's Sayid who's looking beyond that to getting them off the island. Clearly he has unseen opposition - I don't see him as bungling but rather fighting an unknown enemy, who clearly has the advantage.

Or maybe I'm just defending him because he's hot. :)

That's how I saw him too! That's why it was so surprising to hear a different pov on it--particularly since if he hadn't pointed it out I probably would never have even thought of things not working for Sayid. It seems like everything works for him because damn, the man LOOKS GOOD!!

Clearly, we all agree on the most important thing, that he's hot. I think even C had to admit that.:-)

I wouldn't say Sayid's "the bungler" because that, to me, assumes that his failed actions are in some way purposeful. He's more of a "bumbler", I'd say. He comes up with perfectly good ideas (using tarps to catch rain water, triangulating the signal, etc.) but something beyond his control always happens to mess it up. Either it doesn't rain, or he gets bashed on the back of the head with a club, or something. He's a bit of a bad-luck magnet, in that respect.

That's a great distinction--and maybe that's even actually what C said and I got it wrong. I had never thought of him as failing at anything until C said that--to me it seems like he's just been steadily working on this one task, and it's more technological than Jack's. And as you say, stuff just never goes right for him--like when Kate fell out of the tree and smashed the transmitter. He just had to shake his head and try again.
